About the character

Meet Bob

Bob is the voice in your head that has an opinion about everything you are about to try. He is brilliant at remembering and terrible at predicting: great at recalling what happened, hopeless at guessing what happens next.

Every single person on the planet has a Bob. He's not the enemy, he genuinely thinks he's helping. He's just spectacularly, consistently, wrong.

In Bob he shows up in twelve familiar disguises. Here they all are, in his own words.

Which Bobs Do You Have?

Twelve Bobs, twelve things he actually says. Go through them and be honest: some of these will sound uncomfortably familiar.

The Lazy One

Bob's default answer to almost everything is "later." He's not against you doing the work, he just thinks right now is never quite the right time.

"But do you really need to do it today?"

The Catastrophiser

Bob doesn't do small setbacks. One bad test result and he's already fast-forwarded to the worst possible ending, skipping every reasonable outcome in between.

"You won't get into a good school."

The Dramatic One

To Bob, there is no such thing as a minor inconvenience. Every piece of homework is a crisis, every deadline is a countdown to disaster.

"This is the hardest thing anyone has ever had to do."

The Sweet One

Underneath all the noise, Bob genuinely means well. He's not trying to sabotage you, he actually believes he's protecting you from disappointment, even when his method makes things worse.

"I'm only trying to protect you from disappointment."

The Terrible Statistician

Bob loves throwing out precise-sounding numbers that he has completely invented on the spot. There's no data behind them, just confidence dressed up as fact.

"There is a 97% chance this presentation goes badly."

The Short-Memory One

Every single time you've succeeded before, Bob conveniently forgets about it. Each new challenge gets treated like uncharted territory, no matter how many times you've already proven you can handle it. And every time, he says the same thing.

"This time is different."

The Easily Impressed One

Bob's standards for celebration are generous. Simply opening your textbook earns you a full round of applause from him, even though you haven't actually started anything yet.

"Look at you, textbook open. Gold star."

The Master of Distraction

The exact moment you start to focus is the exact moment Bob remembers something urgent, usually something bizarre and completely unrelated.

"Have you ever wondered why we have eyebrows?"

The Negotiator

Bob rarely says a flat "no" to studying. Instead he talks you down to the smallest possible commitment, then quietly hopes that's the end of it.

"Study, but just for ten minutes. Then we see how we feel."

The Secretly Proud One

When you succeed anyway, despite everything Bob said, he goes quiet for a moment. Later, almost begrudgingly, he'll admit it:

"Well. I always thought you could do it."

The Best Friend

Bob isn't the villain people assume he is. He loves you, and he's rooting for you. He's just also completely, catastrophically, spectacularly wrong about almost everything, almost all of the time.

"Bob loves you. Bob is rooting for you."

The Misguided One

If you followed every single one of Bob's warnings, you'd end up exactly where he thinks is safest: on the sofa, having tried nothing and risked nothing. He'd hand you a trophy that says "Stayed Safe. Well Done." Bob means well. Bob is just wrong.

"Stayed safe. Well done."
